


The entire world heard the call in the words engraved on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free.” People came. Those “foolish” men created the most free, most prosperous, most tolerant nation in human history. Did they actually believe they could win? Did they truly believe the common person could be trusted to vote for their leaders? How could the people ever be trusted to govern themselves? Mr. Most of the known world thought our Founding Fathers were out of their minds. July 4, 1776, the United States of America declared its independence from the most powerful nation in the world, Great Britain.
